Dolo 650 became one of India's most talked-about medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic. But Dolo, Crocin, Calpol and Pacimol are not different medicines: they all contain the same molecule, paracetamol.
The quick comparison
| Brand | Maker | Common strength |
|---|---|---|
| Dolo 650 | Micro Labs | Paracetamol 650 mg |
| Crocin Advance | Haleon | Paracetamol 500 mg |
| Crocin 650 | Haleon | Paracetamol 650 mg |
| Calpol 500 | GSK | Paracetamol 500 mg |
| Pacimol 650 | Ipca | Paracetamol 650 mg |
The main differences are strength (500 mg vs 650 mg), tablet formulation and price. A 650 mg tablet of one brand works the same as a 650 mg tablet of another.
What is Dolo 650 used for?
Paracetamol relieves:
- Fever, including fever in dengue and viral infections
- Headache and body ache
- Toothache and mild to moderate pain
It does not reduce inflammation as strongly as ibuprofen, but it is gentler on the stomach and is the preferred fever medicine in dengue.
Is 650 mg better than 500 mg?
Not necessarily. 650 mg gives a slightly higher dose per tablet, which some adults find works better for fever. Lighter adults, older people and people with liver problems may be advised to use 500 mg. Ask your doctor which strength suits you.
How much paracetamol is safe?
- Keep at least 4–6 hours between doses.
- Do not exceed the maximum daily dose on the pack. For healthy adults this is usually up to 4 g a day, but many doctors advise staying lower (around 3 g) for regular use, and lower still if you drink alcohol, weigh under 50 kg or have liver disease.
- Check cold and flu tablets: brands like Sinarest, Vicks Action 500 and Combiflam also contain paracetamol, so taking them together with Dolo can lead to an overdose.
Children need a weight-based dose (usually 10–15 mg per kg per dose) using a syrup like Calpol 250. Always use the measuring cup provided and follow your paediatrician's advice.
Side effects
Paracetamol is very safe at the right dose. The serious risk is liver damage from overdose, which may not cause symptoms until it is advanced. If someone has taken too much, go to hospital immediately even if they feel fine.
Who should be careful?
- People with liver disease or heavy alcohol use
- People taking warfarin regularly
- Anyone already taking another paracetamol-containing product
Dolo vs Combiflam
Combiflam contains paracetamol plus ibuprofen. It is stronger for pain and swelling but can irritate the stomach and must be avoided in dengue, kidney disease and stomach ulcers.
When to see a doctor
See a general physician if fever lasts more than 3 days, is above 103°F, or comes with breathlessness, rash, severe headache or confusion.
Paracetamol for children: safety tips
- Always use a syrup or drops made for children and the measuring device in the pack, not a kitchen spoon.
- Drops and syrups come in different strengths, so check mg per ml every time.
- Write down the time of each dose to avoid repeating it too soon.
- Fever is the body's way of fighting infection; the aim is comfort, not a perfectly normal temperature.
- See a doctor urgently for a baby under 3 months with any fever, a fit, unusual drowsiness, a rash that does not fade on pressing, or breathing difficulty.
Paracetamol in pregnancy and breastfeeding
Paracetamol is generally considered the preferred pain and fever medicine in pregnancy and breastfeeding when used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time. Avoid ibuprofen and other NSAIDs in late pregnancy. Always check with your gynaecologist.
Paracetamol and alcohol
Regular drinking increases the risk of liver damage from paracetamol, even at normal doses. If you drink regularly, ask your doctor for a safe lower limit.
Signs of a paracetamol overdose
Early on there may be no symptoms, or only nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. Liver damage can develop over 24–72 hours. If you suspect too much has been taken, go to hospital immediately: an antidote works best when given early.
Which brand should you buy?
Choose the strength your doctor recommends and a brand from a licensed pharmacy. Because they contain the same molecule, the cheaper option at the same strength works the same way. Read our guide on generic vs branded medicines to learn more.
